What is Legal Design?
Legal design is an innovative approach that combines legal expertise with design thinking to improve legal services and user experience for all legal service providers, clients of private legal services, and citizens of public services.
Design thinking has been used for decades across various industries, driving innovation and problem-solving. The concept in law gained momentum in the 2000s. In 2013, Margaret Hagan spearheaded a project at Stanford’s d.School, bringing together engineers, designers, and lawyers to explore how this methodology could make the legal system more user-friendly.
Leveraging digital technologies and data creates innovative legal resources and tailors solutions based on user needs. Ultimately, legal design improves understanding and accessibility for everyone involved in legal services.
Meet Inês Portela,
Founder of the Legal Design Institute
Inês Portela is a pioneering legal tech entrepreneur and founder of the Legal Design Institute, recognized as a leading advocate for legal transformation.
As one of the earliest legal innovation entrepreneurs, she established a global platform, ‘Law for All’, in 2012 with a vision to democratize access to justice through legal design. After transitioning the company to a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model named ‘Legal Flow’, Inês gained extensive expertise in technology, sales, fundraising, design, agile methodologies, and team management.
With a strong passion for education at the intersection of law, technology, and design, she lectures on ‘Legal Project Management,’ ‘Entrepreneurship,’ and ‘Digital Transformation’ at prominent business and law universities throughout Europe.
Inês is currently the lead expert and curator of academic and executive programs at Nova School of Law on legal design; and an Ambassador for Liquid Legal Institute. She is dedicated to accelerating the adoption of human-centric law and raising awareness about the importance of human-centricity in digital technology governance.
